The threat of terrorism has been assessed by MI5 to be with us for at least 30years according to Eliza Manning Buller head of section. The threat was emphasised as being from CBR chemical biological radiological agents and could include nuclear devices. The potential for disruption to target and downwind business must focus attention with regard business continuity and more importantly resilience. The effects of CBR contamintion unlike explosive events will last days to months and years in the mind of employees who may witness or understsnd the health or personal safety issues. Training and preparedness is now a major responsibility and legal duty for business and their supply chain partners if absenteeism and building closure is to be avoided.

The recent announcement that the Police have issued orders for escape hoods to protect officers at the scene of CBR events should also focus attention on both employers corporate responsibilities and the expectation that Police and emergency services may be in very short supply therefore contingency planning should be in place to defend and protect as emergency response is likly to be delayed for some considerable time.

Avian Bird Flu pandemic has jumped up the list of potential threats as new strains have developed which are unaffected by ani viral drugs currently under development. The USA has published a 200 page document which outlines their response to pandemic. It includes details of border control, quarentine and goes into great detail regarding economic slow down and public disruption.Copies of this can be downloaded from www.safetyhood.com
